The Story Behind Taman Ganesha Retreats

What began as a vision in the heart of Bali has grown into a sanctuary of healing, connection, and community. Taman Ganesha is more than a retreat—it is the continuation of a story shaped by generations of dreamers, builders, caretakers, and spiritual guardians.

The Dream of Klaus

In the 1990s, a German artist named Klaus imagined a place where nature, creativity, and peace could exist in harmony. Inspired by the beauty of Bali, he designed what would become Taman Ganesha.

Bringing this vision to life were two skilled local builders, Pak Putu and Pak Komang. With dedication, craftsmanship, and deep respect for the land, they transformed Klaus’s dream into reality.

Every structure, pathway, and garden reflected a commitment to living in balance with nature.

One of the most unique spaces was what is now Villa 5. Originally Klaus’s art studio, its upper level was designed with large windows and panoramic views, allowing natural light and inspiration to flow freely.

The Builders Who Became Family

A Legacy Built by Family

For more than two decades, the retreat quietly welcomed guests seeking peace, connection, and inspiration.

The spirit of Klaus’s vision remained alive through the hands of Pak Putu and Pak Komang, whose families continued caring for the property and preserving its natural beauty.

The retreat became a place where friendships were formed, memories were made, and generations of visitors discovered a deeper connection to Bali.

The Arrival of Robert & Sue

On 30th March 2023, exactly ten years after the passing of their son Ryan Harrison, Robert and Sue arrived in Bali to view a property they knew nothing about.

Ryan’s nickname throughout his life had been “Ganesh” because of his distinctive ears.

When they arrived, they discovered the name of the property was Taman Ganesha.

What felt like coincidence soon became something much deeper.

Drawn by an unexplainable connection, they knew they had found a special place.

Soon after, they became the custodians of the retreat and began a new chapter in its story.

A Hidden Discovery

During the expansion of the retreat gardens, the team acquired neighbouring land that had previously been used as a restaurant.

While renovating the site, they uncovered something unexpected.

Beneath an old fish pond lay the remains of a forgotten water temple.

Local spiritual leaders recognised the sacred energy of the natural spring beneath the land and advised that the site be restored to its original purpose.

Guided by this wisdom, a new Holy Water Temple was built, allowing the spring to once again flow through the land and back toward the ancient sacred tree and surrounding rice fields.

Today, the temple remains open to local people and visitors alike.

Breathing New Life Into Taman Ganesha

Over the next two years, Robert and Sue carefully renovated the property while honouring its original spirit.

Remarkably, they worked alongside the very people who helped build it decades earlier—Pak Putu, Pak Komang, and their families.

Together they restored, improved, and expanded the retreat while preserving its natural beauty and cultural significance.

What began as a renovation became a family journey.

Today, Meggi serves as the retreat’s overall manager, leading a dedicated local team whose connection to the property spans generations.
